If you’re tired of your old radio that only plays cassettes, there’s an easy solution. With a low budget, and 30 minutes of your time, you could have a brand new head unit for your car. Epsilon Electronics, a company that specializes in car audio technology, will run through the steps to getting your new radio set up.
Choosing a radio
This part if all about your preferences. You have to set up a budget and know what you need when you choose your radio. Do you need the option to play music through an auxiliary cord? Do you want a fancy touch screen head unit? These are all choices you will need to make for your next radio. A new head unit doesn’t need to be pricy. Epsilon Electronics offers head units for as little as 80$.
Step 1: Remove the old stereo
First off, you will need to remove the factory stereo. For this you will need a panel removal tool which will let you get the radio out without scratching anything. Before removing the radio the parking brake should be set & the negative cable should be removed from the battery. This is to avoid short-circuiting the electrical system. You should pay attention to how you are removing it, as it will help you with installing the new radio. Taking a picture of how the stereo is wired can be useful for future reference.
Step 2: Matching up the wires
Next you have to connect the wires of the car’s harnesses to the harnesses of the new stereo. Typically, these are colour coded to show you where to put the wires. Connect the matching wires. You can either connect them by crimping or soldering them.
Step 3: Plugging the antenna cable & the output converter
It is possible that you will need to use an output converter for the radio to work with the other parts. If this is the case, you will need to plug it in now. You will also need to connect the antenna cable at this step.
Step 4: Testing it out
Now’s the time to test it out. Turn the power on the radio and check if it is working now. If it isn’t working properly you might need to fix the wiring. Your last step is to put the stereo into place. This means putting in any screws you may have removed or putting the trim back into place. Enjoy your new stereo system!
